Required Training for DC Ryan White Case Managers

This Mental Health 101 training provides Ryan White case managers with foundational knowledge of common mental health conditions and their impact on individuals receiving HIV care and support services. The training will explore the signs, symptoms, and functional impacts of conditions such as anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, and substance-use related mental health concerns.

Additionally, the training will cover an overview of the Global Appraisal of Individual Needs-Short Screener (GAIN-SS), including its purpose, key domains, and role in identifying potential mental health and substance use concerns.

Participants will learn how to administer, score, and interpret the GAIN-SS and use screening results to inform referrals and care coordination. The session will include a walkthrough of the GAIN ABS software platform, providing practical guidance on administering and managing screenings within the system.

Learning Objectives
  • Recognize common signs and symptoms associated with prevalent mental health conditions affecting people receiving HIV care and support services
  • Describe how mental health challenges may impact engagement in HIV treatment, medication adherence, and overall well-being.
  • Identify appropriate referral pathways and resources for behavioral health, crisis support, and additional mental health services.
  • Describe the purpose, structure, and key domains of the GAIN-SS
  • Identify the steps for administering the GAIN-SS and the considerations for conducting the screening in a client-centered manner
  • Explain the scoring methodology and interpretation of GAIN-SS results
  • Recognize how to enter, administer, and manage GAIN-SS screenings within the GAIN ABS software platform
